Description:
From our personal collection, on offer is this striking old shoulder/yoke mask from the Mumuye peoples of Nigeria. Known as Sukwava, such masks are worn during agricultural rituals, & are characterized by an overall cylindrical form with elongated neck, atop which is a disproportionately small, narrow head framed by exaggerated ears.
With its head crowned by a large crest, one of this piece's more notable features is its neck-ring... it was not crafted separately & merely slipped over the head of the piece -- the sculpture and its neck-ring were carved from a single piece of heavy, dense wood!
Overall condition: good; basic wear & tear, scrapes & abrasions, chips, dry age-cracks, & indigenous repair. Rich patina. Powerful display.
